The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Wednesday formed a three-member ad-hoc committee, days after the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) was suspend. This committee will be head by Bhupinder Singh Bajwa. The move comes a day after the Union Sports Ministry on Sunday directed the IOA to form a committee to manage the affairs of the now-suspended WFI. Bhupinder Singh Bajwa is currently serving as the President of Wushu Association of India. The committee includes hockey Olympian MM Somaya and former international badminton player Manjusha Kanwar. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports on Sunday, December 24, suspended the Wrestling Federation of India, soon after the conclusion of the elections last week.
Sexual harassment case
There was a huge uproar after former WFI chief Brij Bhushan, a close aide of Sharan Singh, who was surrounded by allegations of sexual harassment, was elect as the head of the federation on December 21. Wrestlers had been protesting against former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for several months. Soon after the results of the WFI elections were reveal, Rio Olympic bronze medalist Sakshi Malik announced her retirement from wrestling at a press conference in Delhi. The next day, Olympic bronze medal winner Bajrang Punia returned his Padma Shri. Poonia, who was ask to withdraw her award. Refused to do so until the “brothers and sisters” fighting against sexual harassment were given justice.
Bhupinder Singh Bajwa again made the president of wrestling association
Sanjay Singh, a confidant of former president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, was elect president of WFI. After the suspension, the Sports Ministry had asked the IOA to form an ad-hoc committee. IOA President PT Usha said that the new WFI President and other officials have taken.
